My views on traveling 1400 miles one way in a Hyundai Ioniq 5 before swapping for a Jeep Compass: It's not time for electric if you do long trips ever… even if just one a year.

They need to make charging faster and more consistent, have a standard charging type that matches every vehicle at every charging station, and charging prices must come down, and all need common payment method…not pay by app.. Every charging station had its own app which was annoying. You are all good if you got a Tesla. You can find super chargers everywhere. You're good if you have a Tesla compatible battery or adapter if you buy other brands. In my case, even the best routing software kept routing me to Tesla stations but the Ioniq I had was not Tesla compatible. Next years model is supposed to be compatible. That means I had to download like 10 different apps and find obscure charging stations often in remote locations that ended up needing to take 8 hours to charge… none of which the cars own mapping software mapped out.

Charging was not consistent. A single charge to 100% at one station got me 200 miles and 100% at another got me 280. Also if you run the air, plug your phone in, turn your headlights on, it gives you even less range. I'd consider a long range EV 2-3 more years away but for now, until some standards are the same, it's not time. The one I rented was standard range.

Also to note… these cars can explode if the battery comes in contact with saltwater. A lot of homes destroyed during the hurricane when water flooded garages and the cars went boom during the hurricane.
