Real Uncertainty
The last week has probably been the most frustrating week we’ve had in a long time. That one thing that you never want to have happen, happened. It’s not the end of the world, and we knew we could survive, but it poses a very uncertain future. For like a month Matt has been submitting his resume to companies, just because Toyota Motor Corp. had started to act weird towards him at work. He knew that they were letting people go to downsize the IT department. It all started in the last two weeks. First they came to him and told him no more internet surfing, which he doens’t really do anyway. Then last Monday they told him no more overtime.
So comes this past Thursday. I was having a really bad day to start with. I wasn’t feeling well, and I had put the boys down for what I thought would be a nap, then I laid down to nap. First, I woke up and came downstairs to the strong odor of baby powder. I turned the corner into the hallway and discovered a pile of baby powder on the floor. I said, “ok, well i’ll just vacuum it up”. I then turned the corner again to go into the boys’ room only to discover my 1 year old covered head-to-toe in baby powder. I literally had to shake him off. Then I got this picture, just for his baby book:
Ok at that point I about blew my top! Not only that, but his whole crib was powdered, the whole livingroom, all the carpets, my kitchen floor, and bathroom. I was furious beyond belief. And the culprit? Chris of course — though not one lick of evidence on him. So to say the least he got a but whipping and was sent to his room while I slaved to clean it all up.
Then after I work hard to clean up this mess, I sit at my computer to read an email from Matt that says he thinks he’s out of a job the next day. He said some chinese woman had been asking for his user passwords all day, and that people were acting weird. He came home practically crying. Of course we both were. He’s the only income and then boom…. no income at all. We have done pretty good for ourselves up to this point. We just got done putting thousands upon thousands of dollars of work in our house so our savings is down to almost nothing. Uncertainty was killing us. We did have some hope that point because people have been calling him for jobs for a few days at that point. We had the Pfizer deal in the works already… thankfully.
The plan for his termination was his manager was going to take him out to lunch (at big boy…woohoo) and break it to him. I guess that would have been a good way, but still. You could pay for a better lunch. However, Matt caught onto it a day earlier, and found out about it. So I ordered him not to go to work the next day. I didn’t want him to run the risk of being escorted out or anything. So instead he met up with soem people the following morning, and now he has to get his possessions back somehow.
We went the whole weekend worrying about stuff. We applied for good jobs on Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com like crazy, and for sure he did get a crazy amount of calls on Monday. I never imagined he’d get this kind of response, but when your talented, your talented I guess.
So Tuesday comes, and he has his phone interview with Pfizer at 10:00a.m., which he said was a good and reassuring interview. He went outside and sat in the backseat of the van and conducted it! At 1:30p.m. he had to meet with someone else in Bloomfield Hills, which ended up being a shitty company anyway. Then at 4:30p.m. he had an interview with Google for a position in New York City. We were hopeful at this point becuase of all the calls coming in.
Wednesday comes around (today), and it’s a stormy day. A really good stormy day. We are both trained weather spotters for the National Weather Service, so it was good to see some action. Matt had gone to Troy that morning for another interview, and had to drive through all the storms.
I had an appointment with my loving girlfriend Julie to have a romantic lunch (just kidding!!! ) at Chuck-E-Cheese. I was forced into taking Chris because nowadays they don’t adults in there if your not accompanying a child or at a party. It was funny… back in the day before I had kids we’d still eat at C-E-C on ocassion. She has a thing for breadsticks….an unhealthy obsession with breadsticks . We also went around looking for some apartments and houses for her to rent. Some sounded great, but looked otherwise!
So anyway, I get home and Chris and I walk in the house and Matt is holding Andrew with a grin on his face. I’m like, “What’s the look for?”. He said Pfizer had offered him the job for $85,000 per year. I was very happy at that moment and called everyone to tell them. So many people were praying for things to turn out well. I thank them for their prayers. I’m very excited.
So now it’s 8:00p.m. and it’s storming like crazy. The counties to our south are experiencing tornadic weather and I wish I was there. WDIV channel 4 called our house and said they may put Matt on the phone for a forecast report, but the storms never came here that much so it didn’t happen. If your a trained spotter, the local news outlets will call you for reports.
So today has been a good day…. well with the exception that Andrew woke up from his nap as “the scary monster” that Chris drew. I’m getting so tired of this stuff!
Chris decided it would be a good time to be artistic. He does this crud when I put them down to take a nap. Grrrrr. He also drew train tracks all up his own legs.
Ah well – Things can only get better can’t they?
