From Coastal Central Florida to Lake Superior – July 5th – July 14th
This blog is sort of being written backwards. You know, the whole I can’t remember shit in life. So I’m starting with my Journey home and will fill in the blanks with Jason’s help and the help of the photo’s I’ve taken!
July 12th, 2019: We had Roma’s for dinner and it was odd. We love their food, but I ordered spaghetti carbonara with meat sauce on top and chicken noodle soup. First thing I did was scald my hand and leg with the super hot soup in our hotel room. That hurt. I had a piece of their massive garlic bread, always good. My pasta though, nobody knew how to make it clearly. It was pasta with chunks of eggs and bacon, eww. Topped with meat sauce.
Jason ordered the Ravioli and he enjoyed that. He stopped at Wendy’s out front and got 2 Frosty’s but I can’t really have that so I drank 1/3 of it and gave him the rest. We went to bed fairly early I think while watching Live PD on A&E.
July 13th-14th:
Our final wake up at LaQuinta Inn in Southgate was approx. 9a.m. EST. At first we discussed eating their continental breakfast than heading out on the road trip, so after we packed up and loaded the car I told Jason, no, their breakfast sucks. No hot breakfast. Knowing we’d go 12 hours between eating I suggested he try a Coney Island so I took him to Wild Coney in Southgate, MI. He ordered a “Mexican Omelet” which had traditional Coney sauce on it, as opposed to chili, which is how they labeled it.
I ordered the “Wild Skillet” which was scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, peppers, American cheese, on top of a bed of severely undercooked potatoes. Overall though, we both enjoyed the food.
After Wild Coney we headed onto “The Henry Ford” aka Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. We bought tickets for both the village and museum but with time constraints and already sore feet we chose to keep this trip to the museum only.
I figured this would be a great place to show Jason, all the innovation and technology over the years along with the massive locomotives, the presidential limos including the one Kennedy was assassinated in. We spent a good 4 hours there and we left assuming we were directly headed home now. LOL. I always have a detour.
After The Henry Ford I insisted that we stop at Kroger and stock up on Faygo. There are like 2 varieties available in Florida at RaceTrac gas stations, Red Pop, and one other. While in Michigan we enjoyed a couple unique flavors like Candy Apple (odd flavor). So we bought $25 worth of Faygo then finally thought ok, time to go home to Florida, LOL.
Next we remembered, oh, we had been collecting water samples and sand samples from each Great Lake and had forgotten about nasty Lake Erie. So, we stopped off early and took some pictures at Fermi 2 Nuclear Power Plant since it was on the way. I’m weird like that.
Finally we get to the ever gross Sterling State Park, which Fermi II outputs its water into and you know us Downriver people are all slightly odd swimming down the shore from a Nuclear plants output, omg. Everyone seemed happy there, people having picnics, little children happily swimming in the nuclear waters lol. So we grabbed some photos of all that. Finally we were on our way home. Then I said, oh wait, you haven’t been to Calder’s Dairy Farm, which was just 8 miles away. I always went there with my kids and of course they have the best milk, ice cream, butter, and chocolate milk. Jason got some chocolate milk, I got a Souvenir mug that just said Calder’s. We then proceeded on to go pet the cows who chose to eat my whole left arm and Jason’s as well. After that we went back into the shop to sanitize, as you always should.
We left there, and again, finally we thought we were on the path home! Nope, I told Jason that he spent time seeing and doing the things I wanted him to see, so we could take some time to tour the Bowling Green State University campus. It was about 93 degrees outside so it wasn’t optimal but I wanted to take pictures of his alma mater with him. I also harvested some Red Maple tree seeds which maybe I can figure out how to grow in Florida, but I have little hope ha ha.
After that, on the road? Nope. We stopped at the local Meijer assuming we could find car decals for BGSU but no, apparel all over the place, window decals for mostly Detroit and Ohio state but no decals for his university! I was shocked.
We left Meijer and finally now we are on the road. I’ve driven 2200 miles this past week so Jason is driving at the moment.
Right now we are approaching the downtown Dayton area on I-75 South which just like Toledo, Cincinnati, and everywhere in Michigan is under construction. I’m trying to ignore his driving because sometimes it’s a little bit scary lol. Next is Cincinnati and geez I hope he manages that ok. So far so good.
12:38a.m. on July 14th – I am still alive as a passenger, lol. We are 45 miles from Chattanooga and out of the major mountain systems that fall in the middle of our journey on I-75. The bands of rain we made it through so far from Hurrican Barry – a Cat 1 that made landfall this morning in Louisiana.
Once we hit Atlanta, we have 8 hours remaining 🙂
Update: So it’s now 3:50a.m., still a scheduled arrival of 10:40a.m. in Palm Bay. We safely made it out of Atlanta alive, but I still had to guide Jason on what lanes to navigate. It’s a confusing mess of a hell hole. We have 221 miles remaining in Georgia then finally cross into Florida. We seem to have missed most of all the weather associated with Hurricane Barry thankfully!!
